Standing up can be great for your health, but do you know how to get started safely?

You might think that height adjustable desks are just another fad, overrated and likely to be short lived, but in our experience, the benefits are real. Height adjustable desks have grown immensely in popularity over the last few years, as more workers realise the advantages to taking the weight off their bottoms from time to time.

Research has shown that standing for small amounts of time, regularly throughout the day, has far reaching rewards for our health. From burning more calories to reducing the risk of heart disease, height adjustable desks have proven their worth. If you’re thinking about buying one of these somewhat unconventional workstations, here’s what you need to know:

1.      Wear good shoes

If you work from home, or from a carpeted office, you might think that standing at your desk in just your socks is going to be just fine. However, that’s not the case, and you could be risking your foot health and posture if you don’t have appropriate footwear on. Go for trainers with good arch support, and for extra comfort, add padding to your standing area with a yoga mat.

2.      Think about your posture

Just because you’re standing up, doesn’t mean you’re going to be adopting a good posture. Make sure you talk to yourself about the way in which you’re standing, and avoid slouching or letting your back arch too much. Place your feet shoulder width apart, engage your glutes and roll your shoulders back. Fully height adjustable desks will allow you to set them at the optimum height, so you don’t need to over extend or reach down to get to your workstation.

3.      Go by the clock

If you’ve never stood up at work before, chances are you’ll find it quite taxing in the early days. The end goal is to spend around 50 per cent of your working day standing, but don’t expect to be able to do that straight away. Aim for 10 minutes standing every hour, at least to begin with, and gradually build up time as you feel more comfortable doing so. Standing for too long can be just as bad as sitting for too long, so try to achieve a good balance between the two.

4.      Set things up properly

To get maximum benefit from height adjustable desks, the workstation layout should be carefully managed and adjusted. When in standing mode, the desk surface should be around elbow height, with your arms at a 90-degree angle to the floor. Your monitor should be between 50 and 70cm from your face, with the top of the screen at eye level. Using a laptop is not ideal, so invest in a separate monitor so you can use the keyboard without having to bend your neck downwards.

5.      Choose your tasks wisely

The phrase ‘thinking on your feet’ is actually true; we receive a boost to our cognitive skills when we are standing. Increased blood flow can help to enhance memory, problem solving and concentration skills, so can be highly beneficial for creative tasks. However, there are some jobs which are better done in a seated position, such as focussed writing work or intensive report building. In most cases, however, it’s a very personal thing, and you might find you’re comfortable with standing for all sorts of tasks, so take a bit of a trial and error approach.
